The pounding of hooves echoed through my dreams, but I was too exhausted for fear to pull me from my slumber. Sounds flitted in and out of being until a voice joined the dark images, cutting through the fog and dragging me back into the world.
I opened my eyes and blinked, trying to figure out why there would be stone so close to my face.
My neck ached as I lifted my head to examine the blackened chimney. A faint warmth still carried through the rocks Iâd slept huddled against.
âStep back,â a man shouted down below. âAll of you step back. The sorcerer is coming to address the people of Nantic, and by the Guildsâ orders youâve got to give her a bit of room.â
I pushed myself to my hands and knees, biting back a gasp as pain shot through my body.
âWe will have order while the sorcerer speaks,â the man shouted over the grumbling of the crowd. âEvery one of you will listen respectfully, or you will be reminded how a citizen of Ilbrea should show their gratitude to the Guilds.â
Inching forward, I peeked over the pitch of the roof to peer at the street below.
A hundred people had packed together in front of a building four shops down, facing a line of soldiers wearing black uniforms.
I hadnât noticed the seven-pointed star in front of the building the night before. Now, with the sun up, the golden crest of the Guilds glinted in the light, hanging above a sign that read Scribes of Ilbrea.
I pulled myself along the roof, trying to get a better look at the crowd that had gathered below.
A tall soldier with graying hair stood on the porch of the scribesâ shop, glaring at the common folk surrounding him.
The people didnât look too pleased to be standing in front of a line of soldiers either. They shifted their weight and glanced up and down the street. A ring of empty space separated the people from the porch, as though the barren patch the soldier had demanded had been taken up by some invisible force.
The door of the shop opened, and a woman in purple robes stepped out. The bright color of her robes, the way her dark, shining hair had been pinned perfectly back, and the way she gazed down at the people around her, all combined to make the sorcerer mesmerizing.
But there was something in the way a smile curved her lips that terrified me.
âPeople of Nanticââthe sorcererâs voice carried easily over the silent crowdââI am pleased you have ventured out to see me on this beautiful morning. It is rare for sorcerers to leave Ilara. Our duty is to aid Ilbrea. We help our country, and the Guilds who govern us all, best by remaining in our stronghold. Perfecting the magic that protects each one of you.â
The sorcerer held her hand out in front of her. A tiny glimmer appeared in her palm.
The light was beautiful, like a fairy had been birthed in her hand. Before I could blink, the spark changed, growing into a pillar of purple fire ten feet tall.
